Featured Articles :: Bounce House - What age is appropriate? A few Safety thoughts.
by Muriel De Vore (Moon-Walker Party Services Central)
A Bounce House or as we like to call them Moonwalks should be rented for ages 3-12 years of age. There is interactive equipment that is more appropriate for teens and adults. Children need to be able to exit an inflatable on their own. Under the age of 3 would not be able to do so or would have difficulty in doing so.
Supervision is necessary at ALL times. Never leave an inflatable unattended when children are inside. Keep like ages together: Ages 3-5, 6-8, 9-12 years old. Do not over load the equipment. Check with the rental company to find out how many children can use the moonwalk at a time. Keep track of how many children are inside. If the unit starts to deflate have them exit the unit. Accidents occur when the unit is overload, unattended or the rules are not being followed.
Unplug or power off the unit in high winds or bad weather. Do not allow children inside during high winds or bad weather.
Inflatables are used outside just as playground equipment is. Keep that in mind when you rent. Unless you get a brand new one signs of wear will show. Ask your delivery person to wipe down the mat inside. Your delivery person should do it automatically but to be safe tell them too. Many times rentals are turned around from one day to the next. When this happens the rental company does not have time to do a heavy clean on the inflatable. Your delivery person should have cleaning products with them.
Inspect your unit upon delivery. If there is a problem with it do not sign the paper work. The delivery person will have to fix the problem or let their office know. Once you have signed the paper work you accepted the equipment as is.
Ask your rental company if they are insured? What type of insurance is it? Rental companies with prices that are to good to be true, many times are operating without a business license or insurance. They will say they have insurance but they could be referring to their automobile or health insurance. Be specific when asking your questions. You want to make sure the children using the inflatable will be covered if there is a structural malfunction with the inflatable. Malfunctions are rare but as with all amusement, devises there are inherent risks. If a rental company cannot service a public park or school, they do not have insurance. Do you want your children using equipment from a rental company that does not have your child's well being in mind? Yes, you will have to sign a liability wavier upon delivery. That is because you also need to take responsibility for the equipment. You cannot expect a rental company to assume all liability when you are the person in charge of making sure the equipment is used safely. The rental company's insurance is for accidents that would occur beyond any-ones control. It is not for accidents that occur because there was no attendant or the rules were not being followed.
